The Community Space

Open Hours: Thursday-Saturday 2:30-7pm, Sundays 3:30-7pm or by Chance

Our new community space is at 144 Cumberland Ave (between Washington Ave. and Franklin Art) and has a meeting, workshop, and performance space, a kids' area, a kitchen, a large lending library, a free  room, office space, wall space for local art, computers, a public bathroom, and a new bike shop. We opened this space in September of 2005, with a larger grand opening party attended by over 300 people from around Portland and the region.  This new space is right next to Peppermint Park and playground, is highly visible, and is handicap accessible. We host Free School workshops, community events, work parties, meetings, video showings, dinners and performances. We have regular open hours where people can come in, hang out and use the resources that we will have available. The People’s Free Space has become a resource for the community and a hub for activism and community organizing in Portland.

At the People’s Free Space we work to make everything we do accessible to people regardless of income. We offer free workshops, free food, free clothes, and soon free computer access, meeting space, bathrooms and a free space where people can come together to talk, share resources and organize for social change. The People’s Free Space depends on community support to sustain our current programs and now to develop and support our new community space. We apply for grants, organize benefit events, sell t-shirts, and sell literature, but it is the direct support from our community that keeps us going and energizes us to provide community programming for Portland.

We recognize that not everyone can donate money, but if you support our work, please consider donating your time.  We have many volunteer opportunities and always welcome peole to get involved with organizing with the People's Free Space. Another way that you can help the People’s Free Space grow is to offer your input and advice. We love to hear from people ideas they have for this space, renovation advice, criticism and critiques of our organizing structure and suggestions on how we can make our programming more inclusive, diverse and accessible.

Your input helps us grow as an organization and as community members. We also always welcome people to get involved in organizing or volunteering with the People’s Free Space. We want the People’s Free Space to not be just “our” space, but a vibrant community space. We are open to  other groups to organize meetings or events, cook in our kitchen, and use this space. Through this space, we draw people in and expose them to groups, projects and organizing efforts in Portland.Your help, support, and input  makes the new People’s Free Space into a vibrant and important part of our community. We thank you all for supporting us for the past three years, and we are excited about the new People’s Free Space.
